View of Debate From the Oil Patch
Last night may have been the first time many people really watched Obama. My husband, who works for an oil company in a very red state told me this morning that he thinks many of the men he works with probably turn the channel whenever Obama comes on. They hate him that much.
Last night, many of them watched to see their hero, John McCain, smash him. And I don't think you or I would have wanted to hear the names they were calling Obama while they watched.
But look at the polls. Most people liked Obama last night. Many probably were really seeing him for the first time, and they liked what they saw.
I kind of thought that last night was a tie, but my husband and I both are firmly in Obama's camp. We wanted to see a knockout and were disappointed that we didn't.
This morning, as we listened to the results of the polling and to what the pundits had to say, we were a little surprised. Obama did better with undecided’s. He did better with women. He did better overall, and we discussed why.
My husband always wants him to come out punching--to get angry--to fight back hard.
But I think his dignity, is self-depreciating laugh, his shy smile, his willingness to look McCain in the eye, won the hearts of the voters of our country last night.
I feel good.
